Afghanistan, Taliban and the region

Ashraf Ghani

As Afghanistan’s situation is deterorating , neighbouring countries are concerned about a potential spillover of the violence as Taliban made rapid advances across the war-torn country.

There have been reports of Talibans seizing a series of border posts from Afghan forces, including crossings with Iran, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

Pakistan has deployed regular troops at forward positions along the Afghan border due to the fluid security situation in Afghanistan as the withdrawal of American and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) troops are set to complete.

Pakistan, which has been using Taliban for fulfiling its strategic interests in Afghanistan and also for its financial assisstance from Washington, will now find it difficult to prevent itself from the impact of Taliban’s recent military gains in Afghanistan.

The Afghan government has accused Pakistan of supporting the Taliban and preventing the Afghan forces from carrying out military operations against them.

The ties between the two countries have deteriorated to such an extent since the daughter of the Afghan ambassador that Afghan NSA Hamdullah Mohib met former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif in London rather than meeting Pakistan leadership.

Nawaz Sharif and Afghan officials noted that “strengthening democracy” will put both neighbours on the path towards stability and prosperity. Afghan NSA Mohib expressed his “support for the democratic struggle in Pakistan”, and former PM Sharif said a strong and stable Afghanistan is “good for Pakistan and the region.”

The Taliban , who were pushed out of power by the US invasion nearly 20 years ago – have claimed that they are controlling about 85% of the country and are now seeking to cut off supply routes to major cities.

Afghanistan’s government could collapse as quickly as six months after all U.S. troops withdraw from the country, according to new analysis from the U.S. intelligence community.

If Taliban returns to power then questions remain as to what has the world and specially the united States achieved after investing financial , military resources in the country.
