Russian President Vladimir Putin said Daesh or ISIS has recently took 130 families hostage, which is nearly 700 people, including US and European nationals, in part of Syria controlled by US-backed forces, thus confirming that the terror group is expanding its presence.

“They [terrorists] put forward ultimatums and certain demands, and warned that if these ultimatums are not followed up to, they will be gunning down 10 people everyday. The day before yesterday they executed ten people,” Putin stressed.

“We now see what is happening on the left bank of the Euphrates River, our colleagues know that. This territory is under the protection of our American partners, they rely there on the Kurdish armed forces. But they obviously did not work it through, members of Daesh remained in several settlements,” Putin said at the annual Valdai Discussion Club meeting in Sochi.

“Taking advantage of complete impunity, Daesh militants attacked a refugee camp in the Al-Bahra area on October 13, capturing 130 families of about 700 people, and transporting them to Hajin,” Lt. Gen. Vladimir Savchenko, head of the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation, said at media briefing

The general stressed that the abducted civilians were de-facto taken hostage and could be used by terrorists as a “human shield” to protect the militants from the possible attack by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advancing towards the last Daesh-occupied areas on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River
