Major web services down after Akamai glitch

Cambridge, July 22: Internet services of banking, shipping and technology companies faced outages on Thursday with Cloud services provider Akamai Technologies stating of experiencing widespread service disruption, the second major disruption linked to the cloud company in about a month.

Users on downdetector.com have reported issues with the websites and services like Amazon, PayTM, YouTube, among other major companies and brands.
The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company, however, said that it was “resuming normal operations” of its Edge DNS service after some 30 minutes after the company reported the disruption.

The company also said that it is continuing to monitor the situation and confirmed that the disruption “was not a result of a cyberattack on the Akamai platform.”

Video games,websites related to travel, web streaming services, banking, and shipping are among the industries were disrupted.

Internet companies such as Zomato, Paytm, Disney+ Hotstar, Sony LIV also faced major outages. Other popular websites include Olx and gaming services such as PlayStation Network (PSN) services were impacted.

The official Twitter handle of Paytm stated, “Some Paytm services are affected due to global outage at Akamai. We are actively working towards a resolution.”

It further reported that the gaming platforms Steam and PlayStation Network, travel services Expedia and Airbnb, shipping giants UPS and FedEx, and banking and financial institutions such as Chase, Discover, Capital One, Fidelity, and American Express were among others to report disruptions to their web services.
