Putin signs deal with Saudi to reduce tensions with Iran

Riyadh, Oct 15: Russian President Vladimir Putin was given a grand welcome in Saudi Arabia, to the echoes of a 21-gun salute and traveling to the royal palace with a cavalry escort.

The red carpet welcome by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud shows how successful Putin’s diplomacy is at a time when the Middle east region is witnessing Turkey invasion in Syria, hightened tensions between kingdom and Iran after Amarco attacks and thereafter the attack on Iranian oil tanker near Jeddah.

Apart from signing some 20 agreements and contracts worth billions of dollars on aerospace, culture, health, advanced technology and agriculture, Putin and Saudi King Salman signed a major deal aimed at stabilising global oil prices and to reduce regional tensions with Iran.

Putin’s visit follows attacks on Saudi oil installations that Saudi Arabia and the United States have blamed Moscow’s ally Iran for attacks on Saudi oil installations.

Following talks between Putin and Saudi King Salman, the two countries signed some 20 agreements and contracts worth billions of dollars on aerospace, culture, health, advanced technology and agriculture.

Key among the deals was the agreement to bolster cooperation among the so-called OPEC+ countries – the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus 10 non-members of the cartel.

During the signing ceremony on Monday, Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud said,“In the Saudi-Russian Joint Committee, we are working together to harmonize … objectives of the Kingdom Vision 2030 with … objectives of the strategic development plans of Russia, and as a result, the Saudi-Russian high-level strategic cooperation agreements are to be exchanged here today.”

Putin said ‘Russia attaches particular importance to the development of friendly, and mutually beneficial ties with Saudi Arabia.

Putin is in United Arab Emirates on Tuesday to meet the powerful crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.
