Rape Survivor Set Ablaze in India’s Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi, Dec 5: The Unnao rape survivor with 90% burns will be airlifted from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.She was undergoing treatment at the Unnao Civil Hospital.

The rape survivor was attacked by the accused as they wanted to take ‘revenge’ from her. The five accused allegedly poured kerosene on the 23-year-old survivor when she was going to the court and set her ablaze. She suffered 90 per cent burns in the incident.

23-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, who had filed a rape case against two men from her village in March, is critical after she was set on fire this morning by five men outside her village when she was headed to a local court for hearing in the rape case. All five men, including the two rape-accused, have been arrested for setting the woman on fire, said police.One of the two rape accused was on the run and the other one was reportedly released on bail last week. 

The Lucknow Police has been ordered to make all necessary arrangements for airlifting. The survivor will reach the national capital by 6.30 pm.

The survivor was set ablaze as she reported the crime to the police. She had been raped in March this year and the accused were out on bail.

“We got the information in the morning. The woman gave the names of the accused. We had formed teams to arrest them,” said Vikrant Vir, a senior police official from Unnao.
In March, the woman had filed a first information report against two men from her paternal village in Unnao, accusing them of raping her and also filming the act. The FIR was filed in the neighbouring Rae Bareli district reportedly after the intervention of a local court.
