Bushehr (Iran), Nov 11: Russia inaugurated on Sunday a new phase of construction for a second nuclear reactor at Iran’s Bushehr power plant , a facility being fuelled by uranium enriched further than the limits outlined in the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. The accord is collapsing due to unilateral withdrawal of US and reinstated sanctions to choke Tehran’s oil exports and isolate its economy.

Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), and deputy chief of Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom, Alexander Lokshin, launched the new stage at a ceremony where concrete was poured for the reactor base.

This facility will provide 1,000 megawatts to Iran’s power grid. Russia helped Iran in putting built Bushehr first reactor online in September 2011 and is expected to undertake construction of a a third in future, according to the AEOI.

“Nuclear power provides reliable electricity … and each power plant saves us 11 million barrels of oil or $660m per year,” Ali Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said in a televised ceremony.

Iran condemned United States for unprecedented pressure by way of sanctions that blocks Tehran from exporting its crude oil.

US reimposed sanctions after President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the historic nuclear accord in May 2018 to choke Tehran’s oil exports and isolate its economy.
