Suppression of basic freedom by the Modi government in Kashmir, says CPIM

Srinagar, Aug 9 : CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that arrest of political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir shows the authoritarian face of the Modi government and his party stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir as Centre is suppressing their basic freedom.Politburo calls upon the people to protest this anti-democratic act of the Government.

Sitaram Yechury on August 9 said he and his CPI counterpart D. Raja were detained at the Srinagar airport in Jammu and Kashmir and denied entry into the city.This despite the fact that he had informed the administration about his visit to meet CPIM MLA MY Tarigami who is not well and other party workers.

The entire Kashmir has been lockdown with communication blackout .”Since Sunday, we do not know the whereabouts or of the well-being of Com Yusuf Tarigami and our other comrades. As we were detained at the airport, we have left a note for Com Tarigami. We will explore all legal options to trace him,” Sitaram said.
” D Raja and I were not allowed to leave Srinagar airport to meet our comrades. This detention at the airport is a violation of our democratic rights. We strongly protest this suppression of basic freedoms by the Centre and stand in solidarity with the people of Kashmir,”CPI(M) general secretary said.

They had gone to Srinagar to meet their party colleagues, he said.



“They showed us a legal order which did not allow any entry into Srinagar. It stated that even escorted movement int the city is not permitted due to security reasons. We are still trying to negotiate with them,”Yechury said.
