Trump impeachment: Pelosi opens inquiry

Top Democrat and Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Washington, Sep 25 : The US Democratic Party has begun a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump over allegations that he pressured a foreign power to damage a political rival that undermines the integrity of our elections, the dignity of the office he holds and the national security.

Top Democrat and Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the president “must be held accountable”.

Mr Trump has denied wrongdoing and called the efforts a “witch hunt”. “There has been no President in the history of our Country who has been treated so badly as I have. The Democrats are frozen with hatred and fear. They get nothing done. This should never be allowed to happen to another President. Witch Hunt! ,” Trump tweeted.

“The transcript and the Justice Department’s acting in a rogue fashion in being complicit in the president’s lawlessness confirm the need for an impeachment inquiry. Clearly, the Congress must act,” Pelosi said.

Moments after the release, Democrats supporting impeachment pounced on the contents of the White House memo.

“Nearly every line describes a shocking abuse of power,” tweeted Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee.

“This is far worse than I imagined. I can’t believe they released the transcript given what’s in it,” tweeted Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.).

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.), the head of Democrats’ messaging arm and a Judiciary Committee member, went further.

“So even a ‘transcript’ produced by this White House says Trump asked Ukraine to smear Joe Biden?” Cicilline tweeted. “Ok. It’s time to impeach.”

“Democrats wrote to the Ukrainian government in May 2018 urging it to continue investigations into President Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia in the 2016 presidential campaign — collusion later found NOT TO EXIST.” Trump tweeted.

The battle over impeaching Trump is likely to drag into the 2020 presidential campaign and become the biggest issue in key House districts.
