Washington, March 21: U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Thursday evening to state that it was time the United States recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, territory it occupied in the 1967 war.
“After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!,Tump tweeted.
Responding to Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you President Trump!”.
After Trump’s announcement, One way is through legislation in Congress, which indeed already exists and the other way could be through a presidential decision.
Earlier, Trump relocated the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo described the heavily armed Hezbollah group as a risk to their fellow Lebanese and conferred with Israel about the Iranian-backed militia ahead of a trip to Beirut.
Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri “cannot say to anyone that Lebanon is separate from Hezbollah.” The US expressed concerns over the militant Hezbollah group’s growing role in the new cabinet, saying it does not contribute to stability.
Weeks before Israel’s election,Pompeo’s visit is seen as a boost for the Likud chief Netanyahu, who is facing a tough election challenge from a popular former military chief and reeling from a series of corruption allegations.
