Ankara, May 5 : Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said that Turkey will acquire the Russian S-400 missile system and never bow to US sanctions over its agreement.
The deal with Russia has strained ties between the the U.S. and Turkey and “no F-35s Joint Strike Fighter will ever reach Turkish soil.
” Turkish participation in the F-35 program, including manufacturing parts, repairing and servicing the fighters, will be terminated, taking Turkish companies out of the manufacturing and supply chain for the program,” wrote a bipartisan group of leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The head of Russia’s industrial conglomerate Rostec is also ready to cooperate with Turkey on the export and production of their Su-57 advanced fighter jet to fill the hole left by the F-35.
Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Kanal 7, Oktay said United States concerns on the issue were not reasonable and added that Turkey would not back down.
Oktay’s comments come after Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan warned Friday that the Pentagon will halt manufacturing support for the F-35 in Turkey if Ankara buys a Russian missile defence system.
“If Turkey decides that the S-400 is a decision they want to go forward with, then we have to move work out of Turkey,” he said.
